Fashion & Style Awards 2015

Sparks Fly at Portland Fashion & Style Awards

There are no rules in Portland when it comes to fashion. That’s why Portland is quickly gaining recognition in the fashion industry, thanks to its eclectic and far-reaching vibe. Essential to that vibe is the sense of support within the community and the collaborations of local artists and organizations.

Owner of Venus Allure Salon and Spa, Ann Akre, is one of many talented artists who make up Portland’s creative industry. After starting her business in 2010, she created and continues as Executive Producer of the Portland Fashion and Style Awards (PFSA). “I wanted to help create a platform to connect local businesses with the fashion and style industry of Portland to share ideas and discover fresh opportunities to excel their businesses,” says Akre.

Portland Fashion and Style Awards is known for its annual red-carpet awards show, strategically positioned to be the grand finale of the year’s efforts by all that make Portland great. It features a unique fashion show that combines selected finalists to showcase their talented skills jointly. The second fashion show features students from Phagans’ School of Hair Design and Venus Allure Salon and Spa providing makeup and hair. PFSA has a panel of accomplished judges from the industry who curate the list of nominees in a variety of categories, including boutiques, hairstylists, designers, models, photographers and more. Since its first awards show in 2011, PFSA supports local businesses by honoring those who help create Portland’s unique style.

Another organization that is passionate about supporting the community is Mercedes-Benz of Portland. Mercedes-Benz is a proven and recognized first class operation by world standards and PFSA strives to accomplish the same, making Mercedes-Benz the natural choice to join PFSA as title sponsor. General Manager, Andrew Plummer, who has been working at Mercedes-Benz for twenty years, was inspired by Akre’s passion and enthusiasm for the Portland fashion industry. “We both feel the need to bring some well-deserved attention to many talented and diverse artists in the community,” says Plummer. “And what better way to do that than an awards show?”

Even with the upcoming release of the 2016 S-Class Coupe Convertible, Plummer and his team at Mercedes-Benz of Portland always make it a priority to support the community. “Supporting the arts is vital,” says Plummer. “It’s not just about the winners; it’s about supporting the entire community and bringing awareness to these talented artists.” This is why the partnership has flourished between Akre and Plummer as their passion for Portland culture run parallel. Due to the successful partnership between Mercedes-Benz of Portland and PFSA, they decided to team up again to host an annual gala event to help raise money and awareness for local charities. The August 23rd Gala event will benefit Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF), Self Enhancement Inc. (SEI) and Albertina Kerr. “We are very passionate about what these three charities represent and are excited to contribute as much as possible,” says Plummer.

At past events, they have had celebrity guests like Grimm’s Bree Turner and actor Daniel Baldwin. This year we are excited to see the celebrity A-list of talent to add to the ever-growing event. The event is a year-round planning process. “Every year we strive to improve the show, and of course, this year is no exception,” says Akre. Sharing the stage with different entertainers, hosts and musicians is one way Akre accomplishes this.

Celebrity presenters will include LA-based fashion designer Yotam Solomon; and the always-entertaining Poison Waters is co-hosting with KINK-FM radio personality Sheila Hamilton. Along with seeing the latest creations from local designers, guests can once again expect delicious food from local vendors, wine provided by Copa Di Vino and a lot of celebratory dancing with live music by the local band, Hit Machine.

This year’s Acknowledgement Celebration will be hosted at Mercedes-Benz of Portland on September 26th.  The celebration will honor last year’s winners to commemorate their success and announce one finalist from the People’s Choice online voting for PSFA 2015. The annual PFSA event will be held on November 15th at the Portland Art Museum. Since PFSA is all about collaboration, people can go online now to vote for their favorite Portland designers, boutiques and much more! A portion of each ticket sale will benefit JDRF – turning Type 1 into Type None.
