Oregon Ballet Theatre’s Cinderella Opens at Keller Auditorium
Can a kind, pure heart prevail in a world of selfishness and greed? Is virtue its own reward? Will the good guys have their day?
These questions are clearly in the collective consciousness at present, with three productions of Cinderella making their way through Portland this spring. Broadway Across America Portland recently hosted the touring production of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella, and a new film directed by Kenneth Branagh is hitting the screens in March. Portland’s own version of the beloved classic fairytale will be presented by Oregon Ballet Theatre (OBT) February 28th – March 7th at Keller Auditorium.
Get ready for a colorful, magical experience! This is the first time that Oregon Ballet Theatre is staging award-winning choreographer Ben Stevenson’s three-act version of Cinderella, and all performances will feature the live music of OBT’s orchestra. The comic relief will be provided by the heroine’s nemeses, the Ugly Stepsisters, played with hilarity by male dancers. The lovely lady herself will be played by Principal Dancer Xuan Cheng and Soloist Ansa Deguchi. Due to the demands of the role of Cinderella, there will be at least two or possibly three casts. This weekend’s performance will feature Xuan Cheng in the lead role. Casting for next week will be announced on www.OBT.org.
Oregon Ballet Theatre Artistic Director Kevin Irving says, “It’s hard to imagine a more romantic or thrilling addition to the repertory of Oregon Ballet Theatre than Ben Stevenson’s Cinderella. We are so lucky to be able to bring this work to our audience here in Portland; Mr. Stevenson’s achievement in marrying the traditions of high classical ballet to the bawdy music hall is something completely novel and uplifting.”
Oregon Ballet Theatre’s Cinderella is made possible by the support of presenting sponsor The Standard and the Harold & Arlene Schnitzer CARE Foundation.
